Two miles from the water: who derates a coastal condenser

Scan the 2022 California Mechanical Code for salt air, salt spray, or a marine atmosphere, and the count across all 581 pages is zero. The code is not silent at the coast; it just says nothing about salt. So the number that actually derates a coastal condenser has to come from somewhere else, and it does. It comes from the company that built the coil, and it gets drawn at two miles.
Code is a floor, not a specification, and here the floor never reaches salt. Corrosion was simply never the code's job, so it fell to whoever would take it, and the manufacturers took it on their own terms.
So there are three lines drawn at the coast, by three bodies, for three reasons, and they belong side by side. The state's coastal zone, under Public Resources Code section 30103, runs generally 1,000 yards inland from the mean high tide line. Call it 0.568 miles. The code's louver line sits at 1 mile. Carrier's corrosion band sits at 2 miles, which is roughly 3.5 times the statutory zone and twice the code's wind line, both ratios being arithmetic on the published distances rather than anything the three bodies set together.
None of the three was drawn with the others in mind. The only one about corrosion is the manufacturer's, and it lives in a selection guide, not a statute. Carrier even folds the decision into a single character of the model number: in the ninth position, the Variations field, C means Coastal. One letter on the nameplate carries the entire coastal specification, and it is the character most estimators never read before they order.

How fast that happens depends on how corrosive the air is, and there is a measured ladder for it. ISO 9223 puts first-year zinc loss at 0.7 to 2.1 micrometres per year in its C3 Medium category, 2.1 to 4.2 in C4 High, 4.2 to 8.4 in C5 Very High, and 8.4 to 25 in CX Extreme, so the top of C5 is four times the top of C3, and the top of CX is three times the top of C5 again. That climb is a set of steps, not a slope. The severity names are ISO's own, C1 Very Low through CX Extreme; the shorthand that calls C5 the marine category belongs to the American Galvanizers Association, not to the standard, and it oversells the coast.

The one measured shoreline site in the source paper, 10 metres from open sea and facing it, came in at the S2 chloride level, with its zinc classified C5 by mass loss but C4 by ISO's own dose-response function. A parcel at the water's edge still straddles two categories, which means nobody reads a corrosivity number off a map or a mileage. C5 is the ceiling for a shoreline parcel, not the floor for a coastal city.
The escape hatch was never much of one anyway. The Trane Sea Coast Kit is not a coating. Its installer's guide, dated 2002, lists the contents as five 8-inch plastic films on magnetic strips, hung inside the top cover and centered over the aluminum-copper transition joints. It is a splash shield over the galvanic couple, sold against a warranty clause, and it is not metallurgy.
The rest of the field is blunter. Lennox, Fujitsu, and Mitsubishi's METUS all exclude a corrosive or salt atmosphere with no coastal option and no kit; an undated Goodman document disclaims corrosion as a condition beyond its control. Trane's own residential base coverage runs five years on the compressor, coil, and parts, ten with registration, and the one-year figure that gets quoted at homeowners is the commercial column, not theirs. None of those years matter once a claim says corrosion, because salt is excluded from all of them. The specifier who put a standard aluminum-fin, copper-tube condenser inside the two-mile band, a construction Carrier's own commercial table marks not recommended, made that call across two documents and left the exclusion sitting on the owner.
Carrier is the one maker in the set that advertises an affirmative coastal warranty, five years on parts where the failure mechanism is seacoast corrosion, carving out cosmetic corrosion in the same breath. Read that as advertising, not coverage. The term appears only in Carrier's coastal marketing brochure, which itself tells the reader to see the warranty certificate for details; that certificate was not obtained, and Carrier's own product page for the coastal unit lists only its generic warranty, with no seacoast term at all.
That leaves coatings, where the numbers invert the usual trust. A field-applied spray coating is the common coastal upsell, and Carrier's own guide states that field-applied sprayed-on coatings should not be used on its coils and may affect the warranty on some heat exchangers. A factory e-coat is the real article, and its vendor publishes more than 15,000 hours of ASTM B117 salt spray, the biggest corrosion number anyone will hand you. It is also the weakest. B117 is a comparative chamber test, its own standard warns against reading field life out of it, and the figure is the coating maker's claim about its own product. Chamber hours are not years on a side yard.
For the contractor who gets the metallurgy right, that failed coil is the next job, and it shows up first as a permit. A coastal condenser replacement is a permitted mechanical job, and PermitFeed reads those filings across the SoCal jurisdictions it covers, on posted month-to-month terms, so the addresses where a corroded unit just quit are findable rather than guessed at.
581 pages, and not a line about salt

Neither is a corrosion line, and there is no third one to cite.
