Just a screen: what an LED video wall hangs on

Samsung publishes what one cabinet weighs. An IF015H tile is 480 by 540 millimeters and 5.8 kilograms. Eighty of them make a wall, and the wall is 464 kilograms of bare panel before anybody builds the frame that holds it flat. The panels are the part everybody can price, and they are the small part.

The frame under them, the anchorage tying that frame to the building, the circuit feeding it and the tonnage carrying its heat back out belong to four other trades, and none of them are on that line.

Everything that follows is arithmetic on a published datasheet, not a measurement off an install. Eighty cabinets, ten across and eight high, at datasheet rates. A general contractor carries a wall like that as an AV number, because that's who quoted it. An integrator quotes panels, processing and commissioning, because that's what an integrator sells. Between those two scopes sit a structural engineer, an electrician and a mechanical engineer, and none of them were handed a set showing a 464 kilogram object hung on a partition.

Sphere put 580,000 square feet of programmable LED on the outside of a building in Las Vegas, roughly 1.2 million pucks at eight inch spacing, 48 diodes in each puck, per the operator's own release. That's the picture in the room when a client says video wall. The eighty cabinet example is 223 square feet of face. It gets designed the same way.

Twenty-two kilograms a square meter, before the steel

Run the published weight back to a unit rate and it's 22.4 kilograms per square meter: 5.8 kilograms across a cabinet face of 0.2592 square meters, about 4.6 pounds per square foot. That figure is panels only, and the mounting frame or the suspended grid adds to it, often substantially. No multiplier is published that carries the frame as a rate.

Eighty cabinets, ten across and eight high, is 4.8 meters by 4.32 meters, 20.7 square meters of face. Which is the first handoff, and it's where the scope stops being AV.

A permanently installed wall in California is a nonstructural component, and it gets designed like one. Section 1613.1 of the building code sends earthquake design to ASCE 7, and it names nonstructural components permanently attached to structures, with their supports and their attachments, in the same sentence. The edition changed underfoot: as of January 1, 2026 the 2025 California Building Standards Code adopts ASCE 7-22 statewide. That governs anything filed on or after that date. Chapter 13 was rebuilt in that edition, so a 7-16 calculation doesn't carry over. Section 13.4 still wants the anchorage designed for seismic forces, not sized for the dead load and called done.

An ordinary lobby wall carries a component importance factor of 1.0. That factor is the normal case rather than an exemption, and it still means engineered seismic anchorage. The narrow set that gets 1.5 is life safety equipment, hazardous materials equipment, and gear an essential facility has to keep running. A screen in a lobby isn't any of those things. Public assembly doesn't move that number either. It raises the building's Risk Category and its seismic importance factor, which is a different number in a different equation.

The cabinet is 65 millimeters deep, and the wall it goes into isn't, once the frame and the mounting depth and the service access behind it get drawn. A dead module in a 3,200 by 2,880 pixel array stays dead until somebody can physically reach it.

So the drawings need an engineered anchorage detail and the structural scope that lands on the permit. That's time the AV schedule never carried.

The circuit gets sized for full white, not for the demo

The sheet publishes two draw figures with their conditions attached: 772 watts per square meter maximum and 257 typical. Per cabinet: 200 watts maximum, 67 typical. Eighty cabinets is 16 kilowatts at the maximum and 5.36 at the typical. The one that sizes the circuit is the maximum, because nobody controls what gets played on it and the hardware has to survive a full white frame. Sixteen kilowatts is not a receptacle.

NEC Article 100 calls a load continuous when its maximum current is expected to continue for three hours or more. 210.20(A) then requires the overcurrent device to be rated for the noncontinuous load plus 125 percent of the continuous one, and 215.3 says the same for feeders, which is the section that applies once a load is big enough to want a subpanel. California's 2025 Electrical Code, Title 24 Part 3, is built on the 2023 NEC and carries all of it. The definition turns on maximum current holding for three hours, not on equipment being switched on for three hours, and with typical draw running about a third of maximum those are not the same question. Whether a given wall meets it is the engineer of record's call, and there's an exception waiting either way, for assemblies listed to run at 100 percent of their rating.

The code calls it an individual branch circuit and the field calls it a dedicated circuit. Either way it's a homerun and probably a subpanel, and it's a conversation with whoever holds the electrical scope before the frame goes up rather than after the wall is hung.

Commissioning happens in a half lit room with a test pattern on it, at nothing close to full output. That's not the condition the circuit has to survive, and it's not the day anybody finds out.

245 BTU a square foot, into somebody else's air handler

Samsung prints the heat figure too: 245 BTU per square foot per hour, maximum. It's the power figure in other units, because 772 watts per square meter works out to 245 BTU per square foot per hour almost exactly, which means the published heat number is the whole input coming back out and not some fraction of it. Across 223 square feet of face, the eighty cabinet wall rejects about 54,700 BTU an hour. At 12,000 BTU to the ton, that's 4.6 tons.

That lands in a room somebody sized before the wall existed. If the mechanical engineer never saw the AV package, it isn't in the load.

Heat has no symptom on a screen. The wall looks the same at any setpoint. And 4.6 tons that were never in the model don't announce themselves as a video wall problem.

All of it comes off one document, and it's worth naming which one. These figures are from the March 2018 IF015H sheet, article number LH015IFHTAS/EN, which lists 800 candela per square meter calibrated and 1,600 peak. The later IF015H-E is a different product with lower brightness, so a number quoted without its model suffix is two people arguing about different panels. Mass, watts and BTU are all on that sheet, in the units an engineer would want.

It rides in on the tenant improvement

464 kilograms hangs on engineered steel. The anchorage gets designed under Chapter 13 of ASCE 7-22. The circuit gets protected at 125 percent of whatever the continuous portion of 16 kilowatts turns out to be. The cooling is 4.6 tons the room didn't have. On the AV scope of work all of that is one line: a 4.8 by 4.3 meter direct view LED display, 1.5 millimeter pitch, 3,200 by 2,880 pixels, calibrated and commissioned.

A permit set carries those loads as framing and anchorage details, as a panel schedule and a feeder, filed inside a tenant improvement or a commercial build months before anybody picked an AV contractor. Nothing in that filing is called a video wall, and that's what makes it readable early.
